The single most-asked question in collector forums after "is the Submariner overrated" is some flavour of "should my first real watch be a tool watch or a dress watch?" People give different answers depending on what they personally own, which is a tell that the question is wrong. The right question is what does your week actually look like, and then you pick from there.
What we mean by the words
Tool watch is the bucket of robust, sporty designs originally built for a specific function -- diving, aviation, military, racing -- and now mostly worn by people who do none of those things. 40-42mm cases, water resistance well past anything you will ever do, bezels you can use without a manual, lume that survives a Friday night. The actual decision
Most first-real-watch buyers should pick a tool watch. Here is why:
- You will wear it 5+ days a week. Dress watches get worn once a quarter; tool watches get worn into the ground. Cost-per-wear math wins.
- It survives mistakes. Sapphire bezel inserts, 200m water resistance, screw-down crowns. You can forget you have it on in the shower and nothing bad happens.
- Resale is more predictable. The Sub, the Speedy, the Black Bay 58 all have known floors. The mid-tier dress market is much thinner.
The exception is if your week is genuinely office-formal four days out of five. If you wear a tie to work, a Calatrava-style 38mm on leather is not just allowed, it is correct.
